It's been a very rainy spring, especially May! The garlic are nice and tall and some are thicker than my thumb! The peonies are now starting to bloom, but it looks like I got the wrong color again! *sigh*. I won't be growing much this year. A lot has happened in the last few weeks and I am not sure where things stand at the moment. Lots of ground cherries have sprouted as well as pumpkins and lemon verbena. I am pulling out the sprouts as they come up.

I had to dig in the dirt a bit. Finally cleaned up the veggie garden and pulled some more weeds. I started to plant my asparagus until halfway through I realized why I had held off, corn gluten! I had just put the stuff down to prevent spring weed seed germination! UGH! Oh well....I continued on anyway! They'll root when they can! I moved two day lilies. I should really get rid of the one and move another one in its place that is much shorter. Then all I have to do is find a home for the last one! They get too big for the area for which I'd rather grow vegetables instead!Elite Garden Escapeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17800859283173434673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-602667202957690695.post-24731478862055302382016-03-21T22:58:00.000-04:002016-03-21T22:58:29.490-04:00Asparagus & BatsI've been meaning to plant asparagus. Actually, I did plant some at my old house, but I did not have enough sun and I doubt anyone knows what is growing there now! Anyhow, I meant to plant some at the current house, but I never got around to it! If I had planted it my first year here we would've been eating plenty this year! However, I didn't know what variety to buy. I was at Lowes today and saw they had ORGANIC asparagus crowns! A quick search lead me to Mother Earth News' site (love that site!) and it said that male plants produce the most spears without the added hassle of female plants producing seed that sprout and are hard to get rid of! The suggested varieties were the Jersey ones so I picked up two packs of 6 each, giving me a dozen plants! The site said 25 plants yields 10 lbs of asparagus so I am expecting around 5 for my amount! I picked up 'Jersey Knight'. Now I just have to figure out where I want to plant them and when! They seem to be sprouting already in the little bags.
A few days ago, before the orchid show, I was upstairs in the nursery. I had sat down on the floor to check on my ferns and upon getting up, the floor squeaked, which is not unusual for a 116 year old house! But then, I heard flapping! Out of the corner of my eye I saw movement. As I focused onto the area of movement, I realize it was a bat! Oh yeah, I screamed like a girl! Then I panicked! What do I do?!?!?!?! After I saw that it quit moving, I ran downstairs for a box. Upon coming back upstairs, I grabbed one of my new canvases so that I could scoop it in the box and keep it in there. However, when I got back into the room, the bat was...GONE! ACK! Where did it go?! I immediately texted hubby who told me to text a friend of ours who had experience with a bat indoors. She told me that they feed only 20-30 mins each night and they always come out at the same time. Well I closed the door to the room in hopes that it did not escape while I was out looking for a container to capture it with. I checked for days and saw no bat. I knocked around the room hoping it would appear. No bat. Tonight, I went to check again and noticed a dark blob where there should be no blob and viola! Found the bat! I was really lucky that it was hanging out in the blinds by the window! I carefully opened up the window and placed a tennis racket over it so that it could not fly back into the room. I tapped the blinds a few times in hopes that it would scare it to fly out the window, but no such luck! I had to use a bamboo skewer to gently prod at it in hopes that it would leave. It really did not want to leave! I didn't blame it....the cold room was much warmer than it was outside! Eventually I used the bamboo skewer to move it's little legs off the blinds and it was at that point it decided to jump out the window with its wings spread. Unfortunately it did not attempt to fly! It fell on the roof and bounced a few times down. I'm sure it got a concussion! Eventually it landed inside the gutter. I was hoping it would land on the roof so I could get a picture, but landing in the gutter is better for the little guy b/c it was a long fall had it fallen off onto the ground! I hope it found its way home, away from my house! Hopefully it never comes back inside either!
Boy this year was a disappointment to the local ski resorts! There was no snow! We went skiing for the first time here right on the biggest snow day, but that was it! However, as a gardener, I sure was excited! The only thing I am not looking forward to is the bug population, except for the good bugs! Anyhow, two days ago, Sunday, I was able to finally see my garden in good light thanks to Daylight Savings! My garlic is a good 6-8" tall now. Lots of weeds that overwintered and thanks to the rain last night, the soil was nice and soft to dig in and pull weeds out! I also planted some peas tonight since this Thursday and Friday are orchid show days so I won't be home early enough to see. Of course, that has never stopped me before! :D
Tonight I needed some garden therapy and my garlic needed to be planted so I cleared out the tomatoes and planted the garlic in its spot. By the time the tomatoes were out, it was dark and I had to plant by head lamp! They maybe a bit crooked, but they are in! Will need to get some compost!

This coming weekend will be our first frost and it will be a hard one, I think! I still have a few plants to dig into the ground, but if not, I can place them next week I guess! I would just have to bring them back inside during the cold spell! I think the Dahlias will need to be dug up next week I bet.
Elite Garden Escapeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17800859283173434673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-602667202957690695.post-67197735163568154112015-09-25T18:45:00.000-04:002015-09-25T18:45:06.881-04:00Autumn is Upon UsThe Autumn equinox is upon us this week, however, it has yet to feel like it and I am not complaining considering the slow start to summer that we had! I went to Lowes today in hopes of finding more larger plastic pots for my hot peppers. Unfortunately they had none. What I did find was some bulbs! Found a pretty big Allium that blooms 10-12", Christophii. I also got two bags of Ruby Giant Crocrus and planted them in front of the house by the upper walkway. It gave me a chance to yank out some of the variegated ivy in the one area.

My super hot peppers took a toll this summer during our drought. Some of the plants in the smaller pots really got stressed even though I watered daily. Finally I had the time to pot them up even though it is almost time to have them come back in. I pondered moving some plants in, but I hated to lose outdoor time by bringing them in too early. :\

I pulled up some dead Dill and found a volunteer Indigo Rose tomato! I also pulled out some really dead tomatoes, Manyel and Black Krim. :'(Elite Garden Escapeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17800859283173434673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-602667202957690695.post-31632053205653510202015-08-14T12:39:00.001-04:002015-08-14T12:39:27.998-04:00Visitors & Harvest

Two days ago I discovered a visitor and it brought some friends! I have been growing orchids since 2000 when I went to Lowes to find some houseplants to grow. Lo and behold, there were these two lonely plants on one of those blue flat bed carts marked down to $2 each. Little did I know what they were. When I went home to do some research online (back before Google was around!) on the search engine Yahoo.com I found out they were ORCHIDS! ACK! Aren't those really hard to grow?! Well those first two orchids took a beating from me. I put them in full sun when you shouldn't (I did move them behind the south facing window screen when I found out) and fertilized with good old Miracle Gro fertilizer! I did everything wrong! But....under my novice care, I got a bloom! It wasn't perfect, but it was a bloom nonetheless and I was HOOKED! :D

Those two Miltonopsis plants are long gone now...they did not survive the move across the country. Hundreds of orchids later, a lot of which I have killed either due to lack of knowledge, not the right growing conditions, neglect (yes, I forget to water too! Or I overwater!) and probably just plain too many plants to care for...I can now say I can grow them if I put my mind to it! I was a member of my local orchid society for over a decade until last year. I am always asked when others find out that I grow orchids "Aren't they really hard to grow?" As you can see from my first experience, they are tougher than you think! So, here are some step by step instructions on how to grow your first orchid! And no, absolutely NO ICE CUBES!!! *cringe!*

Step 1: Locate a healthy plant. A great starter plant is the Moth Orchid. The flowers look somewhat similiar to the image at the top of this post and the leaves are paddle shaped such as in the pic at the bottom of this post.

Step 2: Pull said plant out of the pot while you are in the store and look at the roots. Disregard any weird looks you may get. You NEED a healthy plant to start with! Put it back if it has a ton of brown mushy roots, white hollow roots. You want white or green firm roots! Go ahead, take your fingers and give those roots a gentle squeeze. Find one? GOOD!

Step 3: Search out and purchase a bag of Orchid Bark Mix along with your orchid. Take both home. If your plant has buds on it that aren't open yet, take care to protect them from drastic temperature changes or else you may lose them in what we call a bud blast. They shrivel and fall off! A paper bag is best for this.

Step 4: When you get home, grab a bucket, dump some of the bark mix in, add water and one (1) drop of dish soap. Give it a good stir and leave overnight. Place your orchid in a safe place where it is not in direct full sun all day long.

Step 5: Ok you're awake now! Most orchid enthusiasts will tell you to wait until the plant is done blooming to repot. I've found that if I wait that long, those pretty firm roots are all rotten by the time I am ready to repot. So, do this my way b/c I have not had one person come back and tell me this hasn't worked for them. ;) Go run water through your orchid pot. When it is throughly soaking wet (take care not to get water into the crown of the plant or else this too will rot your plant and kill it quickly!) pull the plant out of the pot. If you see roots sticking out above the pot, that's OK! Make sure those roots are wet also. They should turn from white to green.

Step 6: Pull off old potting mix

Step 7: Take a pair of sterile cutting tools....either torch your cutting utensils with heat or get throw away blades and cut off any brown mushy or hollow roots.

Step 8: Now gather all the roots and make sure they are wet, green, and pliable. Bend them down and place plant back into the same pot it came in. If you can't fit all the roots back in, you may go one size up in a pot. Otherwise, place it back in the same pot or if it does not have enough roots to fill that same pot, go smaller. Orchids like to be pot bound so do not over pot! Now scoop that bark mix you had soaking all night into the pot making sure the bark is poked into all the nooks and crannies around the roots. Tap the pot gently on a hard surface to get the mix to settle in also. Continue until the pot is completely filled making sure the plant is anchored really well in the pot. Be careful with your flower spike that you don't break it!

Step 9: Place plant in a east, west or shaded south window. Water pot throughly once a week and fertilize "weakly weekly", by mixing up only 1/2 of what is suggested on your fertilizer label. Once a month, just flush pot with plain water with no fertilizer added.

So there you have it! You're on your way to growing your first orchid! Here is your shopping list:

1. orchid
2. bark mix
3. a size larger and smaller pot
4. fertilizer that has no urea as the nitrogen
5. cutting blades

The secret to getting these moth orchids to bloom? If you throw them outside in late summer (under a tree or something for shade) until the temps hit 50ΛF, the temperature change will shock it into blooming!

The other question I get a lot is, "My flowers have all faded, what should I do?" You have three options: cut the spike (stem) that held the flowers all the way to the base, cut the spike down to the level of where the first flower came out, or do nothing!

Cutting it down to the base will give your plant time to recover. Flowering is very taxing on the plant itself. It's like preparing to have babies constantly. If you cut at the base, you probably won't see flowers until the next season.

If you cut where the first flower had bloomed, it may branch out and grow more flowers for you!

If you do nothing, the end may grow more flowers for you, or it may grow a baby plant!

If either of the last two scenarios grows a flower that is all deformed, you should consider cutting the spike all the way at the base of the plant to let it recover instead. If the spike turns yellow and then brown, it is dead. No more flowers will come off that spike and you should just cut it at the base.

Good luck!
This time I was able to get the name of it! Orbea variegata! It's quite a large flower....2-2.5" in diameter and very pretty! I have not tried smelling it. It seems to only attract very small flying insects. The petals are quite leathery.
I've had this one forever! I was given a 6-8" start of this on my 18th birthday from a friend. When I moved, I took a start of it with me and gave the plant to a good friend of mine. You should see that original plant now! It's just gorgeous! I've had it for 18 years now and I have also shared with lots of others. This one is Huerna schneideriana. The flowers are about 3/4" in diameter. Waxy flowers with no odor detected. Apparently these plants are only male or female and this one is a female. I believe the Orbea above is a female also.
I repotted all my new peppers today. Some were ready to be repotted, some weren't....but they all got repotted anyway since I was doing so! This will give them plenty of room to grow and possibly green up! I'm not sure why these look so pale whereas the others look nice and dark green! They all get treated the same!
Anticipation of a beautiful dark Dahlia! I think this is Black Jack, which is new to me this year. I can't wait! I wish they would all bloom at the same time so I could cut the flowers and still have some to enjoy outside!

I heard on the radio last week that out of 30 days in June, 21 of them were rainy! It was still that way carrying over into July, but today was a nice break in the weather! It was actually a tad hot, but I'll take it after all that rain! Lots of weeds growing in the garden. I just keep pulling! The tomatoes are getting huge and some are putting out fruit. The mosquitos are really bad this year. I just had the citronella candles going with bug spray on and was still getting bitten! I was hoping they had all died off in the cold rain! LOL Fat chance eh?

Years ago my hubby's grandfather grew his squash in hanging baskets. I thought that was absolutely brilliant! I am finally trying that theory out this year. I think this was lemon cucumber. The rest of my squash is under netting this year thanks to possible squash vine borers, but I left this one uncovered to see if this would work. I doubt it as when I potted squash in pots it never stopped them!

Or maybe you don't... Each year I look forward to see what survived the winter! This year, as well as last year, I have had dill and tomato plants grow from missed seed. This year is no different except I think my ground cherries and chives have also sprouted! The chives are everywhere! Since I have more than enough, I dug them out and potted them up, then I placed them at the curb with a FREE sign! I'm just hoping one greedy person didn't just take them all like it did last year. π³ I like to share the wealth and expect others to do the same! I know....not everyone thinks the same unfortunately. π

Elite Garden Escapeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17800859283173434673noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-602667202957690695.post-27571905163233567932015-05-09T20:38:00.001-04:002015-06-20T23:33:24.901-04:00More May Market Finds

I barely made it back to May Market today! What happened to spring?! This year was the first in 10 years that I have been a master gardener that I did not volunteer at Phipps May Market. It wasn't unintentional...I did sign up, but a coworker took the day off to get a head start on her vacation and I did not realize the change so I had to work instead. Normally that wouldn't be an issue except that we are under staffed. Luckily it went on til 7pm and I managed to get out on time on a Friday! It was SO hot though! It is usually cold or rainy for this event! It certainly didn't help wearing my polyester uniform with wool socks and compression sleeves!

Phipps had more Hakone grass. I meant to ask Margie to order me some, but I forgot. I should've asked if she was ordering and if so to save me some, but again, I got busy and forgot! They had 9 left and I bought all 9! I just need ONE more! UGH! Oh well!
The mosquitos are out in full force already. I went to plant those Hakone grasses and got three giant bites already! Lovely! One of the two things I really hate about summer weather!
